About us

Who we are

Created out of necessity. We work in partnership with councils, life saving clubs and organisations to make beaches accessible to all people.

Our story

Accessible Beaches was established in 2016 by beach-lover and business owner Shane Hryhorec. In 2020 it became a registered charity.

Shane Hryhorec is a wheelchair user after an accident in 2007. At 21 years of age, he suffered serious injury to his C5 spinal cord and was left an incomplete quadriplegic — in addition to also having a hypoxic acquired brain injury (ABI).

After quickly discovering that the thin wheels of his wheelchair were too easily bogged down in the sand, he searched for a solution that would once again allow him to go to a place he loved so much, the beach.

He stumbled upon an image of a wheelchair-friendly beach mat, which gives wheelchair users a stable surface to move across sand.

He decided to do everything he could to advocate for Australia’s world-famous beaches to become more accessible and to make the necessary equipment available to those who need it.

In 2020, Shane founded the Accessible Beaches not-for-profit organisation to help achieve this vision of beach accessibility.

Accessible Beaches collaborates towards this goal with other organisations, life saving clubs, government, people with disability and their families. We strive for innovation by working together to create positive change.

Accessible Beaches is led by a strong group of volunteer Board members that are committed to providing people with disability the opportunity to enjoy the beach and participate in those quintessential Australian beach summers just like everyone should be able to.

Our values

We strive for innovation by working together with our partners to create positive change.

We Advocate

We deliver evidence-based advocacy, representing people with disability and mobility challenges, to campaign for Australian beaches to be made accessible to everyone.

We Work in Partnership

We work in partnership with Councils, Surf Life Saving Clubs and Community Groups to guide them on the accessibility journey. We provide expert advice, skills and services to assess accessibility and plan a path towards improving access to the beach and surrounding areas.

We Build Communities

We create opportunities for Councils, organisations and community members to share knowledge and resources about how to establish and improve accessible beaches and waterways. This includes troubleshooting how to leverage and optimise resources and how to overcome perceived barriers.

We Train and Educate

We run comprehensive training sessions covering Disability Awareness, Access and Inclusion and Running a Successful Accessible Beaches Program. We aim to challenge unconscious bias and take a personal approach to understanding challenges experienced by people with disability and breaking down the barriers that hinder them from accessing the beach.

We Create Sustainable Impact

We create sustainable outcomes that impact not only the people with disability and mobility challenges but also the people delivering the services and the community at large. We call this the ripple effect, where the impact of providing an inclusive and accessible environment has far reaching and lasting effects.

Our services

As the leading experts in beach access in Australia, we provide a number of services to help you on your journey to beach accessibility.

We call it a journey because that is exactly what it is. You just need to start somewhere.

To do this, we have designed a suite of services to help you, no matter what stage of your journey you are at.

Not sure where to start?

Beach Audits

A Beach Audit is a great place to start when you are not sure what needs to be done to make a beach accessible.. During this audit we will assess the beach and its facilities, including transport to and from the beach. This is a detailed look at all factors that make a beach accessible.

We will then provide you with a report that details the findings of the audit, including existing accessible features, gaps identified and recommendations on what needs to be done to make the beach accessible.

Already completed your own viability assessment but unsure of what compliance requirements there are?

Then a comprehensive audit by an accredited Access Consultant will provide you with a detailed report, listing all requirements against DDA regulations. This is a traffic light report that will list options for compliance and a cost guide for each one.

He grew up in South Australia participating in many sports including football, swimming and triathlons. Growing up on the coast, he was also a patrolling member of the Surf Life Saving club. Living in Adelaide and Melbourne, Shane set up and ran several companies providing foundation for a long and fruitful career in running businesses.

In 2007, Shane broke his neck and drowned in a swimming pool accident. He spent five days in a coma and his life as he knew it changed forever. Shane discovered he was now a C5 incomplete quadriplegic. He also had a hypoxic acquired brain injury (ABI) and would be dependent on his wheelchair.

Growing up and enjoying the beach, then having that taken away, ignited a passion in Shane to find solutions to change the beach landscape. Accessible Beaches Australia was founded in 2016 with the simple mission of making beaches around Australia accessible and inclusive for all.

Ian works for a >$1b global law firm where my role is embedded in our global legal operations team where he specialises in pricing, analytics and commercial pricing strategy. Ian’s role has a huge focus on driving internal change to identify mutually beneficial commercial outcomes between valued clients (including new clients), the market and also the firm. As a very young lad growing up in Africa, Ian was taught from a very young age to respect, honour and acknowledge all people regardless of background, culture or circumstance. Our AB Team Members

  • Volunteer Spotlight - Kelly Armstrong

“I started volunteering with AB midway through 2021. I had stopped working in a council that offers a beach access program and I wanted to continue being involved in some way with increasing the opportunities for all people to enjoy the beach.

From my time at that council, I had come to recognise that many access issues are the same around the country regarding beach inclusion. With this knowledge I have worked with AB board members to apply for grant funding rounds and have been working of guidelines to support new beaches to be more inclusive.

Everyone I have come across who is involved with AB has a passion and love for the beach. They want everyone to be able to enjoy in this experience that can help people feel they belong in the Australian community. If this sounds like you, come and join us!”
